Tips for First-Time EV Renters
Before You Drive
- Familiarize yourself: Spend 10 minutes understanding controls
- Check the range: Know your starting battery level
- Plan charging stops: Especially for longer trips
- Locate charging ports: Front, rear, or side of vehicle
- Understand regenerative braking: May feel different initially
While Driving
- Use Eco mode: Maximizes range
- Precondition cabin: While plugged in when possible
- Monitor range: Keep eye on battery level
- Plan for charging time: Factor into trip duration
- Enjoy the instant torque: But don't drain battery with hard acceleration
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Range anxiety: Modern EVs have plenty of range for most trips
- Not charging overnight: Wake up to full battery
- Ignoring charging apps: They save time and money
- Forgetting to unlock charger: Use app or button
- Returning with very low charge: Check rental policy
Cost Comparison: EV vs Gas
Example: 300-Mile Weekend Trip
Gas Car (30 MPG):
- Fuel needed: 10 gallons
- Cost at $3.50/gallon: $35
Electric Car:
- Energy needed: ~100 kWh
- Cost at $0.15/kWh: $15
- Savings: $20
Over a week-long rental, savings can exceed $50-100.
Range Anxiety: Myth vs Reality
The Myth
"I'll run out of charge and be stranded"
The Reality
- Average daily driving: 30-40 miles (EVs offer 150-300+)
- Charging infrastructure growing rapidly
- Trip planning apps show all charging stations
- Most rentals are local/regional (well within range)
- Navigation systems warn you well in advance
Pro Tips to Maximize Range
- Smooth acceleration: Gentle on throttle
- Use cruise control: Maintains steady speed
- Limit AC/heating: Pre-condition while charging
- Reduce highway speed: 65 mph vs 75 mph = significant difference
- Plan efficient routes: Navigation optimizes for EVs
Special Features to Enjoy
