To reach Bab Taza by rental car, the practical option is to pick up the vehicle in a northern city with professional agencies —Chefchaouen, Tetouan or Tangier— and drive to this mountain town in Chefchaouen province, in the Rif, near Talassemtane National Park. This guide is for international travelers, Moroccans living abroad and local drivers who want to visit Bab Taza at their own pace: where to pick up the car, which vehicle to choose, what to confirm in writing with the agency and how to plan the trip.
It is a mountain companion to our main guide Car rental Chefchaouen.
Where to pick up the car for Bab Taza
We have not verified any rental agency with an office in Bab Taza, so the usual approach is to collect the car in a better-connected nearby city:
- Chefchaouen: practical if you are already staying in town and only need the car for mountain day trips. The choice may be smaller than in large cities, so compare early.
- Tetouan (city or Sania Ramel airport): a middle option if you arrive in the north or want to combine coast and mountains. See the guide Car rental Tetouan.
- Tangier (city or Ibn Battuta airport): useful if you arrive by plane or ferry and want to see more of northern Morocco before heading into the Rif.
Some agencies may offer delivery to an agreed point. Confirm the place, time and any delivery or one-way return charge in writing.
Which car to choose for mountain roads
Rif roads have bends, gradients and sections whose condition can vary, especially on secondary roads. Choose based on your group, your luggage and your actual route:
- Compact: usually enough for two or three people with light luggage on paved roads, and easier to park in narrow streets.
- Sedan or estate: more space and comfort if you chain several days between Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen and the mountains.
- SUV or crossover: more ground clearance. It only makes sense on tracks if the agency explicitly allows it in the contract.
Also confirm the gearbox (manual or automatic), the number of seats and the boot size before booking.
Checklist before booking
- Driving licence and documents: ask the agency which documents it requires in your case (national licence, international permit, passport or ID card) and which age and licence-tenure rules it applies.
- Total price in writing: ask for the total rental amount for your actual dates, including extras, delivery and return.
- Deposit: ask for the amount, whether it is blocked on a credit card, debit card or paid in cash, and when it is released. The deposit is separate from the rental price.
- Insurance and excess: read what the included insurance covers, the excess amount and the exclusions (tracks, tyres, glass, underbody).
- Permitted areas: confirm whether the contract allows driving on rural tracks or only on paved roads.
- Mileage, fuel and cancellation: confirm whether mileage is unlimited, the fuel policy and the cancellation or change conditions.
- Assistance: ask who to call in case of a breakdown or incident in the mountains.
- Preparation: download offline maps (mobile coverage can be patchy in the mountains) and check the weather forecast.
Collection and return checklist
At collection:
- Check the bodywork, wheels, tyres, glass and lights.
- Test the air conditioning or heating, indicators and handbrake.
- Photograph the exterior, interior, mileage and fuel level with the agency employee, and ask for existing damage to be noted in writing.
At return:
- Arrive with time to spare before the agreed hour.
- Leave the fuel as the contract requires and remove mud if the day was wet.
- Take photos just before handing the car back and ask for a return document.
- Keep the contract, payment receipts and photos until the deposit is released.
How to plan the Chefchaouen – Bab Taza trip
Many travelers stay in Chefchaouen and make day trips into the mountains. A few planning ideas:
- Leave early to make the most of daylight and drive calmly on the bends.
- Stop in Bab Taza for a drink, supplies and local advice on the trails.
- Combine the day with other parts of the park, such as the Akchour waterfalls: see the guide Car rental Akchour.
- Avoid driving at night on mountain roads you do not know.
- Bring water, some food, warm clothing and suitable walking shoes.
Driving and parking tips in the Rif
- Follow the signs and the speed limits posted on each section.
- Slow down on tight bends and watch for pedestrians, animals and farm vehicles.
- In the village, ask your accommodation or locals where to park comfortably. Carry some cash in dirhams for small expenses.
- Do not leave valuables visible while you are walking.
- In rain or fog, increase your following distance and consider postponing the trip.
