The Agafay desert is a rocky plateau near Marrakech, made of stones, packed earth and dry hills that create a lunar landscape, especially at sunset. Car rental for Agafay is the easiest way to experience the desert on your own schedule: leave when you want, stop where you want and head back whenever you like. In this guide you'll find how to book with RentalMe, which vehicle to choose, a one-day itinerary and practical tips for the road.

Why rent a car for the Agafay desert

Transfers and organized tours work, but they come with fixed times, set stops and no detours. With a rental car, you decide the plan.

Arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset, or at dawn to photograph the first light on the rocks.
Stop along the way whenever a view of the Atlas Mountains catches your eye.
Load luggage, camera gear and warm clothes for the evening with ease, which is especially useful for families and small groups.
Combine a visit to Marrakech and the desert experience in the same trip, moving around independently.

Where to start: Marrakech

You rent the car in Marrakech, then drive to Agafay. Choose the most convenient pick-up point for your accommodation and plans, as agreed with the agency.

Arriving by plane: if you want to get going right away, ask the agency whether airport pick-up is possible.
A few days in the city before the desert: you can pick up the car on the day of your excursion and rent it only for the days you need.
Return: check the agency's hours and return conditions in advance, especially if you come back from the desert in the evening.

Tip: fill up the tank in Marrakech before you leave.

Which vehicle to choose for Agafay

The choice depends on the number of passengers, your luggage and above all the road leading to your camp or lodge. Always ask your accommodation what the last stretch is like before choosing a category.

Category	Ideal for	Advantage
City car	Couples, solo travelers	Nimble, economical, easy to park in town
Compact / sedan	Several days around Marrakech	More comfort and luggage space
SUV / crossover	Unpaved access roads, families	Ground clearance and a higher driving position
7-seater / minibus	Large families and groups	Maximum space for passengers and luggage

Staying overnight in the desert: if you're carrying a lot of luggage, choose a roomy car.
Not just cars: on RentalMe you'll also find motorbikes and vans. To get around town, read our guide to scooter rental in Marrakech.

Rental conditions: read them before booking

Rental conditions vary from one agency to another. Always read the details of each offer on RentalMe before booking and ask questions if anything is unclear. Pay particular attention to:

Mileage: unlimited or with a daily limit?
Fuel: how should the tank be returned?
Insurance: what is included and what is the excess?
Deposit and payment: what deposit is required and how do you pay?
Documents and second driver: which documents are needed and can you add a second driver?
Cancellation: what are the cancellation conditions?

Tip: at pick-up, photograph the bodywork, interior, mileage and fuel level together with the agency staff member. This helps avoid disputes at return.

Sample itinerary: Agafay as a day trip from Marrakech

Many travelers visit Agafay as an afternoon excursion, heading back to Marrakech after sunset.

Before you leave: ask your camp or lodge for precise directions for the last stretch, often with GPS coordinates, and download the map offline: the signal can weaken in the desert.
Leaving the city: leave Marrakech's neighborhoods behind and follow the road signs; the landscape opens onto fields, villages and, on clear days, the Atlas Mountains.
Afternoon in the desert: enjoy the colors changing with the light, a walk among the rocks or a mint tea at your accommodation.
Evening: stay for dinner in the desert or head back to the city, depending on your plans. Check in advance with your accommodation where to park the car.

Have a few extra days? With the same car you can also explore the Ourika Valley or Imlil, at the foot of the Atlas.

Practical tips for the road and what to bring

Drive carefully: follow the road signs, keep a moderate speed and take extra care on unpaved access roads and after sunset.
Watch out on rural roads: pedestrians, mopeds and animals can appear suddenly.
Heat: in summer, prefer leaving early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Water and sun: bring plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, even for short stops.
Cool evenings: keep a jacket or warm layer in the car.
Charged phone: a car charger or power bank, plus a small flashlight for parking after sunset.
Valuables: don't leave them in sight in the parked car.
